What is An ACL Tear?

Strong cruciate and collateral ligaments connect and move your two largest knee bones, the femur and tibia. Your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) helps control back and forth knee movement and provides rotational stability. An ACL tear is a common sports injury that is usually sustained while running, jumping or cutting. If you injure your knee, it is important to check for ACL tear symptoms and contact Active Orthopedics & Sports Medicine as soon as possible.

What are the symptoms of an ACL tear?

You will feel like your knee gives out, and possibly hear a snap or pop if you tear your ACL. It will be hard to bear weight on your injured knee without feeling it feeling unstable and uncomfortable. Other symptoms will include:

  • Decreased range of motion
  • Pain and swelling for at least 24-48 hours
  • Tenderness

Symptoms will typically get worse so it is best that an Active Orthopedics & Sports Medicine specialists examines your knee, makes a formal diagnosis and prescribes a customized treatment plan as quickly as possible.

WHAT ARE MY TREATMENT OPTIONS?

Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) are prescribed to decrease initial symptom severity. If you partially tear your ACL, nonsurgical treatment options may be prescribed:

  • Immobilization
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
  • Physical therapy

If you completely tear your ACL, your injury may require arthroscopic ACL repair surgery. At Active Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, our Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists are ACL injury experts who will help you recover as quickly as possible from your injury using the latest non-surgical and surgical treatment options.
