What is a Rotator Cuff Tear?

Your rotator cuff is comprised of four tendons that insert on the top of your shoulder bone. Your rotator cuff has the important jobs of stabilizing your shoulder and rotating and lifting your arm. A sports or physical activity related injury, fall or aging can cause a partial or complete tear of your rotator cuff. An appointment with a Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Specialist at Active Orthopedics & Sports Medicine specialist should be made as soon as possible because the tear will require medical treatment in order to fully heal.

What are rotator cuff tear symptoms?

Recognizing symptoms and making an appointment with an Active Orthopedics & Sports Medicine specialist is the first step toward a complete recovery. Symptoms you should look out for are:

  • A grinding or cracking sensation (crepitus)
  • Inability to lift or rotate your arm
  • Pain when lifting your arm
  • Shoulder instability
  • Shoulder pain
  • Weakness

Your Active Orthopedics & Sports Medicine specialist will analyze your symptoms, obtain a medical and injury history, perform a physical examination, and order and analyze x-rays and an MRI. He will make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe an appropriate customized treatment plan.

Partial tears may be treated with nonsurgical treatment options. Your treatment plan will help decrease your symptoms and increase your shoulder function. Any of the following may be included in your customized plan:

  • Anti-inflammatory and pain medications
  • Corticosteroid injection
  • Immobilization in a sling
  • Physical therapy

Surgery may be recommended if you have a complete tear. During a minimally invasive arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, our Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Orthopedic Surgeon attaches torn tendons to their normal insertion points on your shoulder.

We have helped thousands of patients with rotator cuff tears return to an active and healthy life using the latest advancements in non-surgical and surgical procedures.
