What is it?

Your spine is made up of 24 vertebrae that perfectly align to form a narrow spinal canal. Your spinal canal protects your spinal cord as it travels from your brain to lower back. Spinal stenosis is a condition in which your spinal cord narrows and pinches one or more of your spinal nerve roots. Spinal stenosis may occur in your cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back) and lumbar (lower back) regions but in most common in the lumbar spine.

What are spinal stenosis symptoms?

It is important to identify your spinal stenosis symptoms as soon as possible. Early treatment ensures your condition and symptoms do not get worse. Key symptoms include:

  • Pain in the back or neck
  • Numbness in the extremities
  • Tingling in the extremities
  • Weakness in the extremities

You may experience symptoms in your spine and/or extremities, depending on where your spinal stenosis is located and what nerve root is compressed. At Active Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, our Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Spine Specialists analyzes your symptoms, perform a physical examination and orders medical imaging studies to accurately diagnose your spinal stenosis and determine its severity.

What are my treatment options?

A customized treatment plan is created to relieve your spinal stenosis symptoms. Your customized nonsurgical treatment plan may include:

  • Activity modification
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
  • Physical therapy

If you suffer from severe spinal stenosis or your symptoms do not respond to nonsurgical treatment, your Active Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Spine Specialist may recommend other treatment options such as:

  • Injections
  • Interventional pain management
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS)

Following treatment, your condition and symptoms quickly improve and you return to a normal life with minimal, if any, restrictions.
